2014 Sino-UK Coevolution of Life and the Planet Summer School
Palaeoenvironmental Research

Dates: Saturday 5th -  Monday 12th July, 2014

Location: Lectures and seminars in Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology, China; Field course near Nanjing

Encouraged by the success of our Spring School in 2012 and 2013, this year we coorganise with Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology the Coevolution of Life and the Planet Summer School in China. The summer school will be in the beginning of July and in Nanjing. The Summer School is aimed at graduate students and early career postdoctoral researchers, primarily the ones involved in sponsors' projects, namely the 973 Coevolution Project of Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology, Nanjing State Key Laboratory of Palaeobiology and Stratigraphy and NERC "Life and the Planet" Research Programme. But enquires by those outside the programme/projects are also welcome. The purpose of the Summer School is to provide students with an overview of state-of-the-art and hands-on palaeoenvironmental research. Course tutors are all senior researchers working actively in various earth science disciplines from the UK and China.

Timetable of the Summer School:

Friday, 4th July, 2014: Arrival in Nanjing!

The 2014 School lasts in total 7 days. Day 1  and Day 4-7 will be held at the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology, Day 2-3 a short field trip will be carried out near Nanjing.

The outline for the course content is as follows.

Course tutors are senior researchers working actively in various earth science disciplines from the UK and China. Additional research-led topics will be covered during evening activities. All participants will need to submit a poster and prepare for a 5-10 mins presentation on their own research.

Detailed timetable and more names are still to come...

Attendance Requirements of the Summer School:

1.      The Spring School is mainly aimed at the postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers involved directly in the three sponsors' projects, namely the Chinese 973 Programme: "Coevolution of Life and Environment around 600 myr ago", Nanjing State Key Laboratory of Palaeobiology and Stratigraphy and NERC "Life and the Planet" Research Programme. But enquires by those outside the programme/projects are also welcome. The number of participants is limited because of the cost, places will be filled on a first-come basis.

2.      There will be evening sessions during the whole Summer School.  All participants are required to give a 5-10 minutes presentation of their own projects as well as a poster to illustrate their research. The poster session will be held on Wednesday evening (9th) after the workshop while students’ presentations will be on Thursday (10th) afternoon and evening. Please submit a short abstract of about 500 words in English by 10th June.

3.       Only officially registered participants will take part in the field course, laboratory practicals and some evening sessions.
