Coevolution of Life and the Planet Spring School 2012:
Palaeoenvironmental Research

Dates: Friday 23rd – Friday 30th March 2012

Location: Field course in Dorset;   Lectures and seminars in Southampton

At the end of March, 2012, “Long-Term Coevolution of Life and the Planet” (the programme) will have our first Spring School. The Spring School is aimed at graduate students and early career postdoctoral researchers, mainly the ones involved in the programme. The purpose of the Spring School is to provide an overview of state-of-the-art palaeoenvironmental research to the students. Course tutors are all senior researchers working actively in various earth science disciplines.

The Spring School will start with a two and a half day field course in Dorset, followed by four days of lectures and seminars at Southampton’s National Oceanography Centre coorganised by NERC Earth System Sciences Summer/Spring School Project (ES4).

Timetable of the Spring School:

Friday, 23rd March: Arrival in Southampton Parkway Station at midday. Departure as a group from Southampton at 1pm!
During the fieldwork, accommodation will be in Portland Heights Hotel.

Saturday, 24th March: Fieldwork around Seatown and Charmouth
_
Sunday, 25th March: Fieldwork around Lulworth Cove

After the weekend’s fieldwork, drive to Southampton Holiday Inn.
_Monday, 26th –Thursday 29th, Lectures and seminars in Southampton National Oceanography Centre

The outline for the course content is as follows.

26th: Earth history & Palaeoclimatology and Ecological Evolution/Biodiversity

27th: Oceanography from different perspectives

28th: Boat activityon on the NOC research ship RV Callista and Quantification of the rock and fossil record

Attendance Requirements of the Spring School:

1.      The Spring School is mainly aimed at the postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers involved directly in the programme. Other NERC students can be accepted in exceptional cases. All NERC students can anyway apply to the sister NERC Earth System Sciences Spring School (ES4), which will start on 19th March. The Dorset field course is not included in the ES4, but the second week (26th-29th) ES4 lectures and activities are mostly the same as the “Life and the Planet” Spring School.

2.      There will be evening sessions during the whole Spring School.  The participants are required to give a 5-10 minutes presentation of their own projects and a poster to illustrate. Poster session will be held on Monday afternoon (26th) after the lectures; the students’ presentation will be on the same evening. For the presentation, please submit a short abstract of about 500 words by February 29th.

Bursary and fee

The cost of participation will be strongly subsidized by the programme. Nevertheless, a submission fee of £150 for PhD students and £250 for postdoctoral researchers is required.

Travel to and from Southampton is not included in the bursary. But all the accommodation, meals and travel during the field course in Dorset and later in Southampton will be fully covered.

Applications must be made by 12 pm (noon) on 31st January 2012. To apply please fill the application form (format .doc or pdf.) and send it through post or through email to:
