Encouraged by the success of our first Spring School last year, we will have our second "Life & the Planet" Spring School in mid-April. The Spring School is aimed at graduate students and early career postdoctoral researchers, primarily the ones involved in the programme, but enquires by those outside the programme are also welcome. The purpose of the Spring School is to provide students with an overview of state-of-the-art palaeoenvironmental research. Course tutors are all senior researchers working actively in various earth science disciplines.

Timetable of the Spring School:
Sunday, 14th March: Arrival in Exeter! _The 2013 School lasts in total 7 days. The first 5 days will be held at the University of Exeter, followed by two days in North Somerset.
The outline for the course content is as follows. 15th-16th: GENIE Modeling Workshop (Andy Ridgwell) 17th: Earth history, Modeling Practice and presentations (Tim Lenton) 18th-19th: Lectures and seminars by invited tutors (Toby Tyrell, Simon Poulton, Dan Condon, Andy Purvis, Gregory Price,Richard Pancost, Heiko Paelike, Jane Francis, Graham Shields...) 20th-21st: Field Course in North Somerset (Gregory Price, Marie-Emilie Clemence) Course tutors are senior researchers working actively in various earth science disciplines. Additional research-led topics will be covered during evening activities. All participants will need to submit a poster and prepare for a 5-10 mins presentation on their own research. Attendance Requirements of the Spring School:
1. The Spring School is mainly aimed at the postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers involved directly in the programme. Other NERC students can be accepted in some cases. All NERC students can also apply to the sister NERC Earth System Sciences Spring School (ES4), which will start on 8th April.
2. There will be evening sessions during the whole Spring School. All participants are required to give a 5-10 minutes presentation of their own projects as well as a poster to illustrate their research. The poster session will be held on Tuesday evening (16th) after the workshop while students’ presentations will be on Wednesday (17th) afternoon and evening. Please submit a short abstract of about 500 words by 10th March.
Bursary and fee
The cost of participation will be strongly subsidized by the programme. Nevertheless, a submission fee of £150 for PhD students and £250 for postdoctoral researchers is required to meet costs.
Travel to Exeter and travle back from North Somerset are not included in the bursary. However, all the accommodation, meals and travel during the field course in Exeter and later in North Somerset will be fully covered.

It should include a short introduction to your research topic and state how you might benefit from attending the Spring school.
